Communicating your health care preferences with your loved ones or someone you trust is hard. On April 18, Bon Secours is proud to be part of National Healthcare Decisions Day. Our team is available to assist you in answering questions about advance medical directives. Information tables will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the café of each of our hospitals to answer your questions and help you complete your advance medical directive.

Advance medical directives, which are also referred to as a “living will” or “health care power of attorney,” allow you to name a friend, family member or other individual as your “agent” to make your health care decisions—to accept or refuse health care—for you if, at some point, you can’t make them for yourself.

Medical decisions covered under an advance directive include, but are not limited to medication, surgery, mental health treatment, health facility admission, hydration and nutrition by tubes and machines that breathe for you.

Under the Health Care Decisions Act, your agent can’t make healthcare decisions for you that he or she knows goes against your religious beliefs, basic values and stated preferences.

According to the Pew Research Center, 42% of Americans have had a friend or relative suffer from a terminal illness or coma in the last five years and for a majority of these people and 23% of the general public, the issue of withholding life sustaining treatment came up.

Proceeds from the race will benefit CrossOver’s Community Pharmacy, which provides medications for CrossOver’s three clinics, as well as five other area clinics. Last year, Community Pharmacy, the only Richmond pharmacy that operates out of a free clinic, provided more than three million dollars’ worth of medications, and filled 29,000 prescriptions.

“This race is an excellent way to bring Richmond residents together to support a community staple that has helped so many people,” said Lynn Williams, development director of CrossOver Ministry. “CrossOver Community Pharmacy helps thousands of patients each year, and without community support, it could not exist.”

CrossOver Ministry operates a network of three free clinics located in areas of identified need in Richmond, including downtown, west Richmond and Chesterfield County, and serving more than 5,200 individuals annually. CrossOver offers a full continuum of health care services to the uninsured, including family medicine, primary care, obstetrics and pediatrics, podiatry, dental and vision care, mental health care, HIV diagnosis and treatment and critical medications.

Are you ready to go red, get caught and share it? February is heart disease awareness month. Heart disease is the number one killer of women. Bon Secours is thrilled to be your partner in heart health. Will you help spread the word by going red, getting caught and posting it?

On Saturday, February 5, Richmond area women are invited to join us at any area Macy’s Department Store from 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.  We are providing free screenings at each of the four locations. Around our campuses, our Wellness Team will be looking for Bon Secours employees, visitors and patients wearing red. This is one time you want to “get caught”, they will have stickers.

You can also show your support online. It is our first ever virtual “go red, get caught and post it.” It is easy, there are a number of ways to join in and support awareness. No matter how you chose to participate there is a chance you will receive a “thank you” gift from us; something to help you “go red” all year. We will also feature some of the best posts and pictures here on GoodSharing. The best news is that everything you do helps raise awareness about heart disease!

Here is how you can go red and get caught:

• Twitter - Add a red dress to your twitter icon and retweet this message “I am joining @BonSecoursRVA and going red because _________” add, your own inspiring reason. You can add a red dress “twibbon” here. If we catch a tweet of yours when you have the red dress icon, we’ll send you something fun.
• Facebook – snap a photo of yourself, co-worker, friend or group in red on Feb 4 or 5 and post it to our wall. We cannot wait to see your smiling faces supporting healthy hearts. You can also snag a picture of a co-worker or friend in red, upload it and tag them. We’ll reward you both!
• Flickr - All month, take a shot of our hospitals displaying the Red Dress lighting and add it to our flickr pool. See something else around town that inspires you and supports healthy hearts, take a shot of it and share it with us, it will count too.

Distinguished guest speakers included the Honorable Bill Bolling, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, the Honorable John C. Watkins, State Senator of Virginia, and the Honorable Daniel A. Gecker, Chairman of the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors–all instrumental in facilitating approval of the project and the 150 jobs it will bring to Chesterfield County.

Lieutenant Governor Bolling presented Peter J. Bernard, CEO of Bon Secours Virginia Health System and Sister Anne Marie Mack, CBS, Senior VP of Sponsorship for the Bon Secours Richmond Health System, with the Commonwealth of Virginia flag. Chairman Gecker presented them with the Chesterfield County flag. When Malcolm S. Sina, CEO of the DASCO Companies, LLC, went to the podium, he quipped, “Looks like we’re going to need a couple more flag poles!” Then as a team, all six individuals closed the ceremony by performing the ritual of digging into a large rectangle of exposed soil with golden shovels.

Once complete, Phase I of Bon Secours St. Francis Watkins Centre will cover 100,000 square feet and house a free-standing 24/7 emergency center, a comprehensive diagnostic imaging center, and a physician medical office building. Finalization of the first phase is expected in late 2011.

The new facility benefits patients by providing:

• Patient-friendly, easy access to care
• Convenient on-site diagnostic services allow for faster results
