A Nurse Practitioner’s Thoughts on Excellence
May 2, 2011 - 4:32 pmMichele Hughes, Orthopaedic Services Nurse Practitioner at Memorial Regional, was recently named the Director of the Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB). ONCB offers the only certification examinations for registered nurses in U.S. orthopaedics.
Q. What is your vision for the standard of excellence in Bon Secours nursing?
I believe that, with excellence in nursing, you must have people who are committed to their work, who routinely demonstrate professional integrity and who are accountable for their actions. Exceptional nurses are those who are always thinking critically and who think “outside of the box.”
Q. How important is it to you that nurses continue to enhance their education?
Very! I realized very early that the only way to stay abreast of the ever-changing world of medicine is to stay educated . . . Specialty nursing certification should be the standard of knowledge and excellence in their specialty of health care.
Q. What makes your hard work worthwhile? I love watching my patients succeed.
I am so lucky to be in orthopaedics where you help people who have severely debilitating diseases or injuries rehabilitate and gain back the independence they had once lost. I am so fortunate to be with an excellent team of nurses.
