Dr. Sharon Joseph on symptoms and relief from the stomach bug
November 10, 2011 - 12:06 pmAccording to our twitter radar, a lot of folks are feeling under the weather this week in Richmond. This is flu season and we’re seeing a mix of flu symptom and gastro intestinal illness. While we often refer to a G.I. big as “the stomach flu”, it’s actually a very different condition from the virus which causes the flu. Unlike the flu, there is no seasonal vaccine against stomach bugs. Like any contagious illness, the best bet starts with prevention. Remember to wash your hands often, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer and avoid exposure if possible.
In the latest Share The Health, Dr. Sharon Joseph discusses the signs, symptoms, and treatment for the common stomach bug, or gastroenteritis.
If you do come down with G.I. symptoms, Dr. Joseph suggests we should try and stay hydrated. Drinking water is the best option, followed by a 50% mix of water and a low-sugar sports drink. If you cannot keep anything down, Dr. Joseph recommends seeing your primary care doctor. Most Bon Secours primary care locations offer same day appointments, you can find a clinic near you on our website.
