Loading ...Based on delivering high-quality care in six clinical areas, three Bon Secours Richmond Hospitals – Memorial Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s Hospital and Richmond Community Hospital – received top honors in performance as part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)/Premier Healthcare Alliance Value-based Purchasing (VBP) Project.
The six clinical areas include acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), pneumonia, hip and knee replacement, and Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP). Success is primarily related to the real-time identification and intervention of patients through heightened awareness by the bedside clinical teams, care management, documentation specialist nurses and quality.
The awards are based on fifth-year results from the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) project. Bon Secours Memorial Regional was the only hospital out of the 225 participating hospitals, nationally, to receive 12 out of a possible 12 awards, and six of the possible six Top Performance awards. Richmond Community Hospital received one award.
“Providing extraordinary, individual patient care is always our primary goal,” said Michael Robinson, CEO of Memorial Regional, St. Francis and Richmond Community Hospitals. “Our successes in this project are a testament to our medical teams and staff, as well as our ongoing efforts to improving the quality of care we deliver.”
St. Mary’s Hospital, the recipient of eight awards, is the oldest of the four Bon Secours hospitals which make up the Richmond health system. “This project has been a great benchmark for St. Mary’s,” said Toni Ardabell, CEO of St. Mary’s. “We are pleased that we are exceeding expectations and advancing quality in these critical areas, and look forward to continued quality enhancements as we move forward.”
The awards were achieved through a three-year strategic plan across the Bon Secours Health System, the national arm of Bon Secours Richmond. The health system’s goal was to achieve an Appropriate Care Score of 100% across the Bon Secours Health System, which includes 19 hospitals along the eastern seaboard, including seven in Virginia.
Other Bon Secours Virginia hospitals receiving awards include DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, which received 10 awards with four top performance awards, Maryview Medical Center with nine awards and Mary Immaculate Hospital with seven awards.
Overall, Bon Secours Health System Inc. received the highest number of total awards for any health system in the fifth year of the national VBP project.
HQID is the first national project of its kind, designed to determine if economic incentives to hospitals are effective at improving the quality of inpatient care.
